Discovering Jersey

Spend the day on an adventure of discovery, with your Jersey Uncovered Blue Badge Guide.

From collection from your hotel, enjoy a scenic private tour of the Island to learn about our rich and diverse history, and enjoy some of our lovely Jersey fare.

The Victorian Markets – A town foodie extravaganza

From 9.30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

We begin our day’s adventure with a visit to “old” St Helier, and to our splendid Victorian Markets.

Our first stop is the fish market, where you will hear a little about the history of our fishing industry, meet our stallholders, and admire a wide range of fish and shellfish. You may have the opportunity to learn how to shuck an Oyster and peel a prawn, and admire the beauty of a live blue lobster.

From the fish market, we cross the road to our Victorian Central Market. A feast for the eyes in both colour and flavours. Here you can admire our gorgeous floral and fruit and vegetable stalls, and you will be introduced to a selection of the best “flavours of Jersey”.

Along with an overview of the market’s history, you will learn about Jersey produce, agriculture, and experience what locals love to eat. Your tasty treats will include Jersey wonders, fruits, cheeses and artisan breads.

From the Victorian Markets, we will head on a gentle historical stroll through the French quarter, and through our enchanting Royal Square to get a flavour of Jersey life through the centuries. Along the way we will pause for a welcome refreshment before making our way to the harbour front to meet our transport for the next part of our adventure.

St Aubin’s Bay and views of Elizabeth Castle

11:10

Travelling along the south coast of the Island, we will re-discover the location of former shipyards, which in the 19th Century littered the coast in front of the impressive 19th Century Grand Hotel. Admire 17th Century Elizabeth Castle, and learn about the young princes who found refuge there during the English Civil War, and about the 5th Century Belgian Monk and hero who gave our town its name.

We are heading along the route of the erstwhile Jersey Western Railway, and our destination is just a stone’s throw away from the delightful St Aubin’s Harbour.

St Aubin’s Harbour and Village

11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m

Here in what was one our first Port of the Island, find the charming fishing harbour and village of St Aubin, to hear tales of Smugglers, Privateers and Piracy.

Take a moment to stroll gently along the paved areas of the Bulwarks, and admire the sweeping views across St Aubin’s Bay, or simply sit and take in the view for a moment. A perfect picturesque spot for a photograph or two.

Lunch at The Somerville Hotel

12.30 p.m. to 2 p.m

Enjoy a light lunch of Jersey fare at the erstwhile home of the Victorian Socialite J W Chapman. The Somerville Hotel boasts some of the finest views in the Island accompanied by delicious local food beautifully prepared and served in relaxing surroundings.

La Mare Vineyards

2.30 – 4.30 p.m

Established in 1972 La Mare Wine Estate is Jersey’s only working vineyard, and has a wealth of history.

The estate itself is a fascinating combination of history and tradition. Comprising of historic buildings and beautiful gardens with extensive vineyards and orchards, as well as a winery, distillery and estate kitchens which produce a wonderful array of genuine Jersey produce.

Here we will indulge in a truly immersive experience with a fully guided Tour and Tasting. This captivating journey is designed to cater to both experts and novices, offering a behind-the-scenes exploration of the vineyard, winery and distillery. Savour the flavours of exquisite red, white, and rosé wines, as well as a tasting of their delectable Jersey Cream Liqueur. Indulge in the delightful tastes of estate-made fudge, chocolates, and the world-renowned Jersey Black Butter.

At afternoon’s end, we will return you to your hotel via leafy lanes and pretty island views, hoping that your Jersey Uncovered adventure will leave you with picture perfect memories of a perfect day out.
