Jersey Walks – Heritage, Harbours and Island Life

What to expect:

Are you curious about how a small island can tell a truly big story — a story shaped by its coastline, its location, and the ever-present sea?

Do tales of war and peace, merchants and mariners, soldiers and superheroes, ladies and lords capture your imagination?

If so, let Jersey Uncoveredguide you on a relaxed and entertaining walk along the sea wall, around marinas and harbours, and through the historic heart of St Helier.

Our journey begins in Liberation Square, where the striking Liberation Statue stands proudly on the Waterfront. Here, you’ll discover the story behind this powerful monument, commemorating the island’s freedom from German Occupation on 9 May 1945 — and learn about the profound and often dark events that led to that long-awaited moment.

The Heritage, Harbours & Island Life Tour is a two-hour ramble through the charming lanes and byways of St Helier’s Waterfront and marina district. Along the way, you’ll hear the stories that shaped the island — from the construction of the harbours in the 1700s, through centuries of maritime trade, to the arrival of German forces in 1940 and their eventual departure in 1945.

As we explore, you’ll see a 19th-century merchant’s house, 18th-century harbour works, monuments celebrating Jersey’s rich maritime heritage, and subtle remnants of the Occupation — details often missed without a knowledgeable guide to reveal them.

Our stroll concludes near the site of the old shipyards — a perfect spot to pause, reflect, and perhaps enjoy some well-earned refreshments by the water.
