St Clement Mysteries, Myths and Medieval Marvels
What to expect:
A St Clement Walking Tour with ancient monuments
Join Kary Day, Blue Badge Guide, on a light-hearted maritime adventure uncovering mariners’ mysteries, seafaring stories, hidden lighthouses, medieval pathways and ancient monuments.
Beginning at Le Hocq on the St Clement Seashore, explore the wonders of Jersey’s protected Ramsar coastline. Discover the mussel beds, learn how to tell the difference between the rocks scattered along the shore, and hear how this remarkable landscape has shaped island life for centuries.
Along the way, uncover the story of Jersey’s imposing Round Towers and Martello Towers — who built them, and why they still stand watch over the bay today.
From the beach at Le Hocq, we meander inland through quiet country lanes, passing part of the old Jersey Eastern Railway route to find a lighthouse standing unexpectedly in a field. We retrace the steps of the gentry along La Rue de Seigneur and discover an 18th-century signal station that later became a 19th-century folly and, in the 20th century, an occupation observation tower — each era leaving its own intriguing mark.
Admire sweeping views across the bay from La Rocque to Noirmont Point as we seek out an ancient dolmen hidden among hilltop trees. Descending through a woodland path, we join La Blinerie and Samarès Lane to uncover another stretch of the former Eastern Railway line before completing our circular route.
This easy to moderate 90-minute walk includes some gentle hills and rewards you with panoramic sea views, historic landmarks and stories that bring Jersey’s coastline vividly to life
